 Guiding Readers and Writers (3-6)
and
Guided Reading (K-3)

By Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell

If you want a comprehensive book about reading instruction, Guiding Readers and Writers has it all! This 500+ page volume contains information about guided reading, literature circles, reading workshops, writing workshops, and more. Best of all, you don't have to read the entire book to get the information you need on a certain topic. I particularly like the chapter entitled "Getting Started: The First 20 Days of Independent Reading." It contains detailed mini-lessons that guide you through introducing kids to the idea that "reading is thinking," lessons that teach kids how to select good books, apply reading strategies, "buzz" about books with other students, and write about what they are reading. It's truly an invaluable resource for upper elementary teachers. My comments apply to the first book, Guiding Readers and Writers 3-6, but I included the other book as an alternative for K-3 teachers. According to the Amazon reviews, it's every bit as good!
